What You Need: Ingredients and Equipment

The secret to an authentic Vietnamese coffee lies in two things: the right coffee and the right brewer. Here's what you'll need:

Vietnamese ground coffee — Look for brands like Trung Nguyen or Café Du Monde. These are dark, robusta-heavy blends with a naturally bold, chocolatey flavor.
A Phin filter — This small, traditional Vietnamese drip filter is the cornerstone of the recipe. You can find one at most Asian grocery stores near Surrey, BC.
Sweetened condensed milk — This is non-negotiable. It adds that signature creamy sweetness.
Hot water — Just off the boil, around 93–96°C.
Ice — For the iced version, known as Cà Phê Sữa Đá.

Step-by-Step Vietnamese Coffee Recipe

Prepare your glass. Add 2–3 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to the bottom of a heat-safe glass or cup.
Set up the Phin filter. Place the Phin on top of your glass. Add 2–3 tablespoons of Vietnamese ground coffee into the chamber and gently press the filter press down.
Bloom the coffee. Pour just a small amount of hot water — about 30ml — over the grounds and let it sit for 30 seconds. This allows the coffee to bloom and release its full aroma.
Fill and wait. Slowly pour the remaining hot water (about 120ml) into the Phin. Place the lid on top and allow it to drip through. This takes approximately 4–5 minutes. Patience is key!
Stir and enjoy. Once fully dripped, remove the Phin and stir the coffee into the condensed milk until fully combined.
For iced coffee: Pour the mixture over a tall glass filled with ice and enjoy immediately as Cà Phê Sữa Đá.
